Mirikitani ouster urged

Associated Press

Lorraine Akiba, chairwoman of the state Democratic Party, has added her voice to those calling for Honolulu City Councilman Andy Mirikitani to resign.

Akiba said yesterday that Mirikitani should have stepped down after he was convicted July 3 of federal theft, wire fraud, bribery and extortion charges in connection with a kickback scheme.

She said Mirikitani needs to take responsibility for his actions, and as a lawmaker, "he should have respect for the rule of law and the sanctity of the office."

Under state law, Mirikitani is allowed to remain in office until he is sentenced Dec. 4.

City Council elections are nonpartisan, but Mirikitani has campaigned as a Democrat in the past.
