The Left Lane
Creature feature

Actors who played movie monsters will be at the All-Collectors Show.
A couple of the most recognized characters in film history will go eyeball to eyeball at this year's All-Collectors Show, today through Sunday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall: the Creature From the Black Lagoon vs. Jaws.

Actually, 6-foot-5 Ben Chapman, who played the Creature in the classic Universal movie, and 7-foot-2 Richard Kiel, who played 007 James Bond's cable-biting, steel-toothed nemesis, Jaws, in "The Spy Who Loved Me," will be sitting directly across the aisle from one another.

As it turns out, both giants are not only gentle in real life, they're downright pussy cats. They promise to be perfect gentlemen while signing autographs, posing for photos with fans and showing off their movie memorabilia. Plus, says Chapman, "I'm not about to mess with Richard — he makes me look like one of the Seven Dwarfs!"

Kiel, who has starred in dozens of Hollywood features, says in truth he's really more like the loveable character he played in "Happy Gilmore." His wife Diane, at 5-foot-1, totally agrees.

For the love of rhinos

Bowling and rhinos — not two words you often see together. But the Honolulu Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers has been organizing Bowling For Rhinos for 10 years, with proceeds benefiting three conservation organizations protecting hundreds of endangered plant and animal species and their habitats. This year's fund-raiser will be held tomorrow at Waialae Bowl in the Kahala Mall.

Each year the organization raises about $5,000. The local chapter of the national nonprofit volunteer organization supports the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a 111,000-acre area in East Africa that protects both black and white rhinos. The organization also aids in the protection of the Javan and Sumatran rhinos in Indonesia.

Registration to bowl costs $15 (three games, shoe rental, pledge sheet and T-shirt), with a minimum $25 in pledges. Those who would like to sponsor a bowler or offer a donation can call the Honolulu Zoo at 971-7199.

Those who donate more than $25 will be invited to a behind-the-scenes look at the rhinos at the Honolulu Zoo Check out www.honoluluzoo.org or www.aazk.org for more information.
