Hawai'i athletes fare well at judo tourney

Athletes from Hawai'i won 10 gold medals last weekend at the United States Judo Federation Junior National Championships in Monterey, Calif.

Athletes from Hawai'i won 24 medals overall in individual competition, second to California's 158 and 53 golds. There were 812 entries from all over the United States and some from Mexico, Canada and Germany.

Salt Lake Judo club led Hawai'i teams with four gold medals, while Shobukan and Hodokan each had two.

Hawai'i's gold-medal winners in individual competition were:

Melinda Chow, Shobukan, girls bantam (8 years), 23 kg (under 50.6 pounds); Marcus Yoshii, Mililani Seidokan, boys bantam, 35 kg (under 77 pounds); Danica Kamakana, Salt Lake, girls intermediate 2 (11-12 years), 34 kg (under 74.8 pounds); Derron Maki, Salt Lake, boys intermediate 2 (11-12), 30 kg (under 66 pounds); Daniel Chow, Shobukan, boys intermediate 2, 34 kg; Brady Lafortune, Salt Lake, boys intermediate 1 (9-10 years), 26 kg (under 57.2 pounds); Justin Yun, Salt Lake, boys intermediate 1, 30 kg; Tadd Fujikawa, Salt Lake, boys intermediate 1, 34 kg; Ryan Pena, Hodokan, boys intermediate 1, 38 kg (under 83.6 pounds); Nicole Nakata, Hodokan, girls juvenile (13-14 years), 35 kg.


AWARDS

• Kahanamoku honors: Outrigger Canoe Club's Duke Kahanamoku Foundation awarded more than $36,000 to 30 athletes and 13 teams at its annual Mahalo Luncheon earlier this week.

The foundation "honors Duke's memory by providing the means for deserving athletes of our islands to pursue training and competition."

Scholarships worth $17,500 were given to 22 students, including Keesha Aldridge (CSU Dominguez Hills, volleyball), Janna Bills (UC-Santa Barbara water polo), Kanani Dilcher (Puget Sound crew), Melani Rawlins (Hawai'i Pacific softball), Thomas Sanford (Dartmouth swimming and water polo), Parker Smith (UCLA volleyball) and Valerija Vitkauskas (Whittier water polo).


TENNIS

• Maeshiro hired: Long-time volunteer Faye Maeshiro is the new Director of Junior Competitive Tennis for the United States Tennis Association's Hawai'i Pacific Section.

Maeshiro was chair of the junior competitive committee and junior seeding committee. She also served as vice president of the Honolulu Junior Tennis Club and treasurer of the Mililani Junior Tennis Club.

She has been a certified referee since 1997 and member of the U.S. Racquet Stringers Association since 1996.


BOXING

• Hawai'i boxers ranked: Four Hawai'i boxers are ranked by United States Amateur Boxing in the second-quarter rankings for 2001 released this week.

Samson Guillermo of Waipahu, who won national Junior Olympic championships in 1998 and 1999, is ranked second in the bantamweight (119 pounds) division.

Also ranked were Jesse Rodriguez of Wai'anae (No. 5, lightflyweight, 106 pounds), Van Oscar Penovaroff of Kona, Hawai'i (No. 9, lightweight, 132 pounds), Elvis Salas of Wai'anae (No. 7, light middleweight, 156 pounds).

The rankings are compiled based on performances at events and dual meets held in the past six months.


GOLF

• Kyono defends: Rachel Kyono will defend her title at the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship, Aug. 7-9 at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The tournament is considered the third major for female golfers here. Michelle Wie and Stephanie Kono, both 11, won the first two and are planning to play in the third.

Kyono just graduated from Kaua'i High School, shortly after running away with the girls state high school championship. Others in the field include former stroke play champion Anna Umemura and 2000 girls state high school champion Merynn Ito.

Entries are still being accepted. Amateur women belonging to the HSWGA or Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association, with a handicap index of 11.2 or less as of Aug. 1, are eligible.

Play begins at approximately 8:30 a.m. each day.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Metzger, Wong win twice: Fourth-seeded Stein Metzger (Honolulu) and Kevin Wong (Pearl City) won their opening two matches at an Association of Volleyball Professionals event at Marseille, France.

They will play 12th-seeded Jose Loiola and Ricardo Santos of Brazil today.


SWIMMING

• FINA Championships: Hawai'i's John Flanagan finished fourth Wednesday in the 10-kilometer men's open water swim at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Flanagan, head coach of The Kamehameha Schools' aquatics program, was the top United States finisher in 2 hours, 1 minute, 16 seconds at Momochi Beach. Evgueni Bezroutchenko of Russia won in 2:01:04. Twenty-four participants finished the race.


YACHTING

• Asahi Super Cup: Twenty yachts will participate in the fifth annual Asahi Super Cup, which is scheduled to begin today off Waikiki.

The three-day event features mostly Hawai'i-based yachts, with teams comprised of sailors from around the world, primarily Japan and Hawai'i.
