Tao of Voice teacher returning next month

By Jean Chow
Advertiser Staff Writer

Tenor Stephen Chun-Tao Cheng is returning to Hawai'i next month for a concert on Aug. 5, followed by workshops in his vocal method called the Tao of Voice.

Combining ancient Chinese philosophy and breathing practices (ch'i) with European vocal techniques and modern psycho-physical sports training methods, Cheng created the Tao of Voice as a means of improving the singing and speaking voices of both professionals and the interested public.

Students will learn breathing techniques to free and enrich their voices to sing, train their voices to flow and dance with flexibility, enhance expression, and energize and relax.

Cheng will be running three workshops of different experience levels in the technique, as well as a master level workshop.

The one- to three-day workshops run Aug. 8-19. Workshop I costs $95 and is a prerequisite for all other workshops. Workshops II and III are $55 each and the master workshop is $525, which includes three 30-minute private lessons. Discounts are available for those enrolled in more than one class. All workshops will be held at the Academy of the Pacific in Honolulu. For dates and times or to register, call 228-2882.

Cheng's concert, featuring Brazilian guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima, will be held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts theater at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 5. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Call 532-8700.
