Drug ringleader pleads guilty

A Mexican national accused of leading a black-tar heroin smuggling operation on O'ahu pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court.

Ricardo Martinez-Alcala, also known as Alejandro Guzman, was one of 28 O'ahu and Maui residents indicted in June 2000 as part of a nationwide crackdown on a Mexican black tar heroin operation.

Martinez-Alcala, who had earlier pleaded innocent to federal charges, agreed to testify against others involved in the operation.

Martinez-Alcala faces deportation after serving a mandatory 10-year prison term.

The Hawai'i portion of the smuggling operation that also operated in 21 other states was uncovered during a nationwide investigation known as Operation Tar Pit.

Fourth arrest made in fight at carnival

Police this week arrested a fourth person in connection with a Punahou Carnival fight that injured two 15-year-old Roosevelt High School students Feb. 2.

The 20-year-old man, identified as one of the attackers, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. He had been in police custody on an unrelated offense, police said.

In March, an 18-year-old who was in the O'ahu Community Correctional Center for another offense was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder in the case.

And in February, two boys, 15 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. Both were released pending further investigation.

One of the injured students was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds, police said. The other boy suffered minor injuries.

Two charged in McCully robberies

Police have charged two 18-year-old men in connection with two robberies that happened a week ago in McCully.

Mark Ah Nee and Moses Kawaa were each charged with first-degree and second-degree robbery, police said.

The men are suspected of assaulting a 19-year-old man at 1687 Kalauokalani Way and stealing his wallet, police said. The victim suffered a cut lip and a facial fracture.

Later, the two suspects allegedly attacked and robbed an 18-year-old man in the same location.
