Families welcome at garden

Luminarias gently lighting garden pathways and fragrant night-blooming tropical flowers sound like a midsummer night's dream? It's the annual Midsummer Night's Gleam, presented by the city Department of Parks and Recreation, the Honolulu Botanical Gardens and the Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens. The free event will be from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Foster Botanical Garden.
"The Gleam is one of our give-backs to the community," said Heidi Bornhorst, director of Honolulu Botanical Gardens.
Organizers hope to demonstrate nature's positive effect on the human spirit. In addition to enjoying the splendor of the gardens, visitors can purchase night-blooming plants at a plant sale or fresh produce at a country store. Children can get creative at a keiki craft table or learn about the Tanabata Wish Tree. Other highlights include a Chinese lion dance, which will launch the event, as well as entertainment from the Okinawan Paranku Drum Dance Troupe, Andean pan flutists and more. Food and beverages will be available. For more information, call 522-7060 or 537-1708.
