Bringing Hawaiian into homes

By Zenaida Serrano Espanol

Here is an easy way to bring the Hawaiian language into your home. 'Aha Punana Leo, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization of the Hawaiian language, has a Puke 'Oka, or order book, that offers Hawaiian language and teaching materials for all ages. The public is welcome to place orders.

The catalog features materials that cost from $3 to $20, and includes a variety of books, poster sets, flash cards, puzzles and interactive CDs. Videos are also available with or without English subtitles. One of the more popular items is the flash cards and audio tape set, the Kaleka 'Olelo Pokole, which teaches simple Hawaiian phrases.

Shipment of materials within the United States usually takes four to six weeks. The organization also offers a 10 percent educational discount for all schools. Puke 'Oka is printed in the summer and fall. For a free copy of Puke 'Oka or more information, call 523-3992. Or, fax 523-8158, e-mail haawina@leoki.uhh.hawaii.edu or visit www.ahapunanaleo.org
