Achievers

Hospice Hawaii honored the Rev. Mitsuo Aoki with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the arena of spirituality, death and dying.

Sasha Dee Dayoan, 8, of Makiki, won the title of Mini Miss Drill Team USA at the Junior Miss Drill Team USA competition, held in May in Redondo Beach, Calif. Dayoan was the only Hawai'i competitor among the 14 other dancers in her category of first- to third-graders.

Iolani School students Gina Ciang, Tierre Mayuri Fahl, Joel David Minoru Hamaguchi and Christopher William Putre were named the western regional winners of the National Council on Economic Education Economics Competitions. They were among 1,400 students from 188 high schools nationwide who participated in the competition.

McDonald's Corp. awarded a $1,000 national scholarship to Ryan Kakuda, a graduate of Waimea High. McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii also awarded $1,000 regional scholarships to the following high school graduates: Rachel Aquino, Farrington High; Elmer Bonilla, Farrington High; Sunny Cerelijia, Moanalua High; Jewelrica Elegino, Maui High; Robert Howard II, Campbell High; Mary-Margaret Kamikawa, Sacred Hearts Academy; Brent Kobayashi, Punahou School; Tracey Kubota, Pearl City High; Tiana Lau, Wai'anae High; Jessica Oshita, McKinley High.
