Vandals wreck Makapu'u heiau
The leader of a Native Hawaiian spiritual group said two Makapu'u heiau built by the group have been vandalized.
A'o Rodenhurst, who founded the Nation of Ku in support of an independent nation for Native Hawaiians, said vandals knocked over large stones in the heiau, some weighing as much as 800 pounds. The vandalism happened sometime last week, she said.
The heiau are on the makai side of Kalaniana'ole Highway. Rodenhurst said they were built eight years ago.
"It's like the desecration of a church," she said. "Traditional worship is traditional worship. It is a sacred place."
