The KCCN FM 100 Birthday Bash, without question the most successful annual music concert here (set for 5:30 p.m. July 27 and 28 at the Waikiki Shell), is going global with the participation, for the first time, of an international star.
He is Bitty McLean, the British pop phenom with origins in UB40, whose duet with Hawai'i's Justin, "More Than Words," is No. 1 on FM 100's playlist. The song is off Justin's new CD, "The Dreaming Kind."
"Hawaiian music has been getting international attention, and it is only fitting that we include an international act in our show," said Davey D., FM 100 program director and afternoon deejay. "So much of the new Island music sound is a synthesis of reggae, R&B and traditional Hawaiian music. Bitty has a very successful history of blending musical styles with reggae from his time with UB40 and with his own hits. He fits right in to the current Hawaiian music scene and his presence is being well received."
In its 11th season, the bash is becoming a two-night event, with separate slates for each evening. The Island Music MVPs, an all-star revue, will perform both nights, and the first 5,000 entering the Shell both nights will receive a free compilation of songs by the featured performers. Gates open at 4 p.m.
Added to Friday's schedule: Colón, the band comprised of Jake Shimabukuro, Lopaka Colón, Guy Cruz and Andrew McLellan.
Tickets: $25 for pool seats, $19.50 for terrace seats, $18 for general admission lawn seats; two-show prices, $32 for terrace, $30 for lawn (none for pool). Information: http://kccnfm100.com; or call 296-1003 or 526-4400.
