Additional club costs Woosnam two strokes

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England — To a professional golfer and his caddie, Rule 4-4 is about as basic as a stop sign.

Ian Woosnam said he felt like he'd been kicked in the teeth.

"The player shall start a stipulated round with not more than fourteen clubs," it says, before explaining that anyone who begins play with more clubs will be penalized two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred with a maximum penalty of four strokes per round.

Ian Woosnam went to the first tee at Royal Lytham & St. Annes with two drivers and a total of 15 clubs in his bag.

The timing couldn't have been worse for Woosnam, one of four players who shared the lead in the 130th British Open.

At the second hole, Woosnam's caddie, Miles Byrne, said, "You're going to go ballistic."

"Why," Woosnam asked.

"We have two drivers in the bag," Byrne answered.

Woosnam took his hat and threw it angrily at the ground.

"I felt like I'd been kicked in the teeth," Woosnam said.
