Nottage guides Kaimiloa to third consecutive Asahi Super Cup win

David Nottage's Kaimiloa captured the PH-1 class for the third consecutive year as the fifth annual Asahi Super Cup Yacht Races wrapped up yesterday.
Kaimiola finished the five-race, three-day competition with nine points. Desperado/Team Desse Osaka was second in the PH-1 class with 15 points.
"The Asahi Super Cup is the highlight of the year for us and we come in and work hard for it," Nottage said.
Team Constellation aboard Ho'onanea won the PH-2 class with 11 points, defending their title from last year.
Team Second Love and Heat Wave finished second with 19 points.
In the melges the smallest class with 24-foot boats Backbreaker won with seven points, followed by Pegasus with 13.
SURFING
Contest postponed: The Billabong Pro was postponed yesterday due to a decrease in swell.
With inconsistent 2- to 3-foot conditions at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, competitors and officials agreed to postpone the competition.
"The wind has come up and the swell hasn't really seen much of an increase," contest director Michael Barry said.
Depending on conditions, the contest will resume at 7:15 a.m. today.
VOLLEYBALL
Metzger, Wong take third: Hawai'i's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong knocked off the Sydney Olympics gold medalists yesterday to capture third place at a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event yesterday in Marseille, France.
Metzger and Wong, both Punahou graduates, beat Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana, 33-31, 13-21, 15-11, in a match that lasted nearly 90 minutes.
It is the second FIVB medal for Metzger and Wong this season. The pair won in Switzerland on June 24. For yesterday's victory, the team shared $18,000.
In the gold-medal match, Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina defeated Tande Ramos and Emanuel Region, 21-19, 21-19.
In the women's gold-medal match, Barbra Fontana and Elaine Youngs beat Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede, 21-13, 21-14.
WATER POLO
Netherlands tops U.S. men: Arno Havenga scored a powerplay goal with four seconds left to lift the Netherlands to a 6-5 win over the United States yesterday at the FINA World Swimming Games in Fukuoka, Japan.
Punahou graduate Sean Kern scored once for the United States.
HONORS
Athlete of the Year: Senior Keenan Sue of Honolulu was chosen the Male Athlete of the Year at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.
Sue is a 1997 Punahou School graduate.
He batted .442 with 35 RBIs and 32 runs scored in 38 games to lead the Macalester baseball team this season.
Sue was a three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference shortstop and two-time all-region pick.
He never batted lower than .434 in his career at Macalester, and finished as the school's all-time leader in hits (192) and total bases (303).
His career batting average was .437.
