Big Isle drunk driving arrests fall

Big Island police arrested 20 motorists on suspicion of driving drunk during the week of July 16-22. Of those, 11 were involved in traffic collisions, and three were under the age of 21.

There have been 426 DUI arrests on the Big Island this year, a 38 percent drop from the same period last year, and 18 traffic fatalities, compared with 23 for the previous year's period.

Six of this year's traffic fatalities were related to driving drunk, compared with 10 at the same time last year.

The 1,256 major accidents in 2001 represent an increase of 4 percent over the same period last year.

Woman suspected of forging checks

Police yesterday arrested a woman they suspect of scanning signatures onto blank checks at Kinko's Copies.

They said the woman used a copy machine at the Kapi'olani branch of Kinko's yesterday afternoon to scan the signatures. When they arrived, she produced a fictitious Hawai'i driver's license, and was arrested on suspicion of unlawful use of a license.

Man charged in Kalihi stabbing

Police yesterday charged Isaac Ulu, 23, in the stabbing of a Kalihi man with a screwdriver on Sunday near Mapunapuna.

Ulu, who has no address, was charged with second-degree attempted murder. His his bail was set at $50,000, police said.

The victim, 37, took a bicycle to a footbridge on Nimitz near Middle Street, and may have been fishing when he was attacked by a homeless man at about 9 a.m. The man may have argued with him before stabbing him multiple times.

The assailant fled. Police found Ulu hiding in the neighborhood later that morning and arrested him after treatment at Queen's Medical Center for a cut to the hand.

The victim was taken to Queen's in critical condition and upgraded yesterday to stable condition, police said.
