The Left Lane
Wedding rings with Hawaiian style

These wedding bands will please couples wanting rings with a Hawaiian touch.

Ulana O Kukui, artisans who have been crafting Hawaiian jewelry for more than 20 years, designed new wedding bands that feature a lauhala fan handle with a plaited design in the middle, textured to resemble the leaves from the hala tree.

The bordered men's ring is one-third of an inch wide, while the unbordered ladies' ring is one-fifth of an inch wide. Both styles are available in 18-karat yellow or white gold, as well as 14-karat yellow, white or rose gold. The ladies' style is also available in platinum. Prices start at $292 for the ladies' rings in 14-karat gold.

The bands are available at Nohea Gallery in Ward Warehouse, Sheraton Moana Surfrider and Ohana Reef Towers. The Ulana O Kukui collection also includes rings featuring designs of ti leaves, maile, coconut weaving, monstera leaves and flowers.

It's more like 'Planet of the Late'

One of our planets is missing — or at least behind in its orbit.

"Planet of the Apes," Tim Burton's remake of the classic sci-fi film opening Friday, was so close to the wire that previews for exhibitors had to be postponed last week.

The $100 million film, starring Mark Wahlberg as a human stranded on an alien "planet of apes" (along with Michael Clarke Duncan, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, and part-time Island resident Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), is nearly four days behind post-production schedule.

20th Century Fox insists that the movie, partly shot in Hawai'i, will be ready by opening day and that the last-minute rush won't show on-screen.

But 20th Century vice president Bob Harper confessed to inside.com that "We've never done a film on this tight a schedule."

Holdups include last-minute reshoots, re-recording dialogue and special effects (Tagawa, who is back in Hawai'i for a preview Thursday night, has been in and out of the studio in recent weeks.)

The movie originally was intended to wrap in late July for a fall debut, but Fox decided to move it up for summer release.
