Crash victims upgraded

Two women hospitalized after a traffic accident in Nanakuli at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday were upgraded to fair condition yesterday.

According to police, an 81-year-old woman driving a 1996 Nissan Sentra east on Farrington Highway was making a left turn at Nanakuli Avenue when she was struck by a 1999 Ford Escort driven by a 30-year-old woman traveling west.

Both woman were taken by ambulance to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition Sunday. Traffic was diverted off Farrington Highway for about 30 minutes while the vehicles were removed.

Police said preliminary reports show speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

Transportation panel to meet

Pedestrian safety and traffic standards reform will be discussed at the Wai'anae Coast Neighborhood Board Transportation Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. today in the Wai'anae District Park multi-purpose room.

The state is installing an experimental flashing crosswalk system on Farrington Highway near Wai'anae High School to see if the lights will make crossing the road safer for pedestrians.

The committee will also discuss the Nanakuli section of the city's proposed emergency access route and the possible rerouting of Farrington Highway through Makaha.

Residents vote to block nets

The Wai'alae-Kahala Neighborhood Board voted to oppose the Waialae Country Club's plan to erect 60-foot-tall poles for a driving range net and add a service entrance off Waiholo Street.

Last week's vote was five in favor and one abstention. The club has been before the city with its improvement plan, but has not received the support of the Wai'alae Golf Course Community Association, a homeowners group of residents in the neighborhood that abuts the golf course.

The city is reviewing the club's permit application, which is pending the club's submission of a final environmental study.

"It's a visual eyesore," said board chairman Richard Turbin, referring to the poles for the driving range nets.

Kailua resident Betty Hughes said flames were shooting from the stand.
