Kyono leads Isle golfers at nationals

Rachel Kyono, one of five Hawai'i golfers in the competition, shot a 4-over 74 and is tied for 31st place in the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at Mission Hills, Kan.
Kyono, the 2001 high school state champion and a Kaua'i High graduate, is seven shots back of leader Aree Song Wongluekiet (67) of Bradenton, Fla. Two other golfers shot even-par 70s.
The other Hawai'i golfers are: Ayumi Hori (Honolulu, 76, tie for 56th), Dale Gammie (Pukalani, Maui, 78, tie 78th), Rie Ganir (Pukalani, Maui, 79, tie 91st) and Lisa Kajihara (Makawao, Maui, 80, tie 100th).
A field of 156 will play two rounds of stroke play with the low 64 scores advancing to match play, starting tomorrow.
Hawai'i's Lori Castillo won this event in 1978, and went on to win the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links in 1979 and 1980.
SURFING
Robb advances: Kalani Robb was the only Hawai'i surfer to advance to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro in 3- to 4-foot waves yesterday at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Robb won two heats yesterday, defeating Australian Nathan Hedge in the third round, and then upsetting the current No. 1-ranked surfer, C.J. Hobgood of Florida, in the fourth round.
In the quarterfinals, Robb is scheduled to face Damien Hobgood, who is the twin brother of C.J.
Defending world champion Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae was eliminated in the third round by Australia's Beau Emerton. Shawn Sutton of 'Ewa Beach was eliminated in the fourth round by Australian Nathan Webster.
The event is the fourth of eight on this year's world tour.
YOUTH BASEBALL
Waipahu wins: Waipahu defeated Windward, 3-2, yesterday to win the P.O.N.Y. Pony (ages 13-14) Region Championship at Mililani District Park.
Winning pitcher Jowen Murray-Thornton allowed two hits in seven innings.
Waipahu earned a berth in the West Zone Tournament, Aug. 11-15, in Fullerton, Calif. The West Zone winner will advance to the World Series, Aug. 18-25, in Washington, Pa. Warriors advance: The Hawai'i Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat San Luis Obispo, Calif., 8-7, in the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken (ages 9-10) Regional Tournament in Bakersfield, Calif.
The Warriors (3-0) advanced to tomorrow's championship game.
VOLLEYBALL
Pennsylvania-bound: Jeanal Souza of Kane'ohe, a graduate of University High, will continue her volleyball career at Division III Juniata College in Pennsylvania.
Souza, a 5-foot-10 middle blocker, lettered four years in volleyball, basketball and softball.
