Rachel Kyono, the 2001 state high school champion from Kaua'i, shot a 3-over-par 73 yesterday to qualify for match play at the U.S. Girls Junior Championship at Mission Hills, Kan.

Kyono, a Kaua'i High graduate, was the lone golfer from Hawai'i to advance. Her two-round total of 147 made the cut by five strokes.

Christina Kim, a 17-year-old from San Jose, Calif., shot an 8-under 62 yesterday for the lowest 18-hole score in USGA championship history.

Five players have shot 63 at a USGA event: Helen Alfredsson in the first round of the 1994 Women's Open; Johnny Miller in the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open; Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf in the first round of the 1980 U.S. Open; and Jim Wilson in the first round of stroke play in the 2000 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Kim earned medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 133 at the 6,032-yard Indian Hills Country Club.
