Warriors win Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest tourney

Reyn Nagamine batted 3-for-3 as the Hawai'i Warriors routed San Luis (Ariz.), 9-2, yesterday to capture the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Division championship in Bakersfield, Calif.

Winning pitcher Tyler Young and Buen Hatanaka added two hits apiece for the Warriors, who finished the tournament with a 4-0 record and earned a berth in the World Series, Aug. 3-9 at Vincennes, Ind.

Nagamine was named the tournament's MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by Young, Reyn Kimura and Carlton Tanaka.

'Ewa wins state title: 'Ewa scored three runs on three successive wild pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning to stun Pearl City, 4-3, yesterday and win the Little League Major League (ages 11-12) state championship at Walter Victor Stadium in Hilo.

Pearl City led 3-1 but 'Ewa filled the bases with one out before wildness caused Pearl City's downfall.

Winning pitcher Pake Coloma batted 2-for-3 and drove in a run to lead 'Ewa. Pearl City's Carl Grabes batted 2-for-4.

'Ewa advances to the Western Regional Tournament, Aug. 4-14, at San Bernardino, Calif.

Warriors split: San Diego defeated the Hawai'i Warriors, 13-6, yesterday at the AAU National Championship for ages 13-under at Kissimmee-St. Cloud, Fla.

On Tuesday, the Warriors beat the Oceola Pirates, 13-6.

Warriors Steven Dannaway and Jay Angotti had five hits apiece over the two days.

All-star Raiders: Two former Iolani School all-state players were named to the New England Collegiate Baseball League/Cape Cod League all-star game.

Infielder Kainoa Obrey and outfielder Doug Jackson, both of Brigham Young and 1999 graduates of Iolani, will represent the Newport (R.I.) at Saturday's all-star game in Keene, N.H.

As of Tuesday, Jackson was third in the league with a .349 batting average, while Obrey was tied for the league lead in RBIs with 28.


GOLF

Kyono ousted: Rachel Kyono, the 2001 state high school champion from Kaua'i, was eliminated from the U.S. Girls Junior Championship yesterday in Mission Hills, Kan.

Whitney Welch of Las Vegas defeated Kyono, 2 and 1, in their first-round match.

Hamamoto falls short: Jarett Hamamoto, the 2001 state high school champion from Waiakea, missed a playoff for qualifying for match play by one stroke yesterday at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in San Antonio.

Hamamoto shot 75—152 and failed to advance at the Oak Hills Country Club.


WATER POLO

USA triumphs: Sean Kern of Hawai'i scored a goal as Team USA defeated Australia, 6-5, yesterday at the world swimming championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Team USA needed the victory to remain in contention for an automatic berth in the World Cup next year in Australia.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

LeGrande on hot streak: Lee LeGrande, a former Punahou standout, and partner Brent Doble will compete in the Association of Volleyball Professionals Tour stop in Virginia Beach starting tomorrow.

LeGrande and Doble won the last two tour tournaments — July 15 in Muskegon, Mich. and July 22 in Belmar, N. J.
