Californian dies from diving injury

KAILUA, Kona, Hawai'i — A California visitor died Wednesday night at Kona Community Hospital where he was on life support following a near drowning earlier in the week.

The name of the 18-year-old Ventura youth was withheld by police while they notify his Mainland family.

A Kona spokesman said the victim died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kona hospital. He had been free diving around 6 p.m. Tuesday with a friend the same age when he failed to surface from 70 feet of water. The pair had been diving about 150 feet offshore near the former Thurston Estate at the north end of Kailua Bay.

Police described both the victim and his friend, who summoned help, as experienced divers.

Waikiki argument leads to charges

Police arrested a 33-year-old man after he allegedly tried to stab a 28-year-old man during an argument and ended up stabbing the victim's surfboards and truck Wednesday in Waikiki.

According to police, the incident started at 8:05 p.m. at the intersection of Prince Edward Street and Uluniu Avenue during an argument over furniture.

Police said a merchant wanted the assailant to get off his furniture because he was closing up. An argument ensued and the assailant tried to stab the merchant several times. The merchant fled but was punched by the assailant's brother.

Police responded and arrested the assailant on suspicion of second-degree murder, first-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree criminal property damage and third-degree assault.

The merchant suffered a minor laceration to his elbow when he fell, and the assailant suffered a knife wound when he was stabbing the merchant's truck and surfboards, police said.

Big Island police tell of phone scam

Police are warning Big Island residents to be wary of a telephone scam in which the victim is promised $10,000 in exchange for $4,000.

According to police, in this scam, the caller identifies himself as "Steve Martin" and gives an address in the Slovak Republic. The caller asks the victim to send the $4,000 to "First America Salino U.S. No. 20, Salizskaio, 2102 Brahisl, Slovak Republic."

Police said this latest telephone scam is apparently aimed at elderly persons.

Besides alerting the public to the scam, police are urging younger residents to explain the scam to their parents or elderly relatives who may not regularly have access to local news media outlets.
