Defending champs in match play semis

Advertiser Staff

Defending champions Beau Yokomoto and Tommy Hines advanced to the semifinals of the Golf Concepts Four-Ball Match Play Championship with a 4-and-3 victory yesterday at O'ahu Country Club.

Yokomoto and Hines received a first-round bye as defending champs, then defeated Brad Davis and Dave Kowalczyk in the second round. Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield, Wednesday's top qualifiers, also received a bye, then beat Kevin Kashiwai and Shane Abe, 5 and 4.

Feldmann is OCC's head pro, and Stubblefield is a member at the club. They play Brad Bowen and Eddie Lee in one semifinal this morning (7 a.m.). Bowen and Lee advanced with a 3-and-2 victory over Mike Iyoki and Lou Merkle, who upset David Chin and David Ishii in the first round.

Yokomoto and Hines take on Rodney Acia and Kevin Hayashi in the other semifinal. Acia and Hayashi beat Matt Hall and Kevin Carll, 1-up, in the second round.

The final is scheduled to start at noon today.

MORE GOLF

• Pooley sneaks in: Don Pooley, who won't turn 50 for a month, has already committed to play in the inaugural Turtle Bay Championship, Oct. 5-7 at the Palmer Course (formerly Links at Kuilima).

Other Senior PGA players who have made early commitments include Dana Quigley, Jose Maria Canizares, Jim Thorpe, Ed Dougherty, Walter Hall and Allen Doyle. Doyle won last week's Ford Senior Players Championship and is No. 2 on the money list.

Pooley won twice during a 25-year PGA Tour career, the last victory in 1987.

The Turtle Bay Championship offers a $1.5 million purse and is a full-field (78 players) event. The first round will be televised on PAX-TV, with weekend rounds on CNBC.

For more information, contact tournament headquarters at 545-1588.

BASEBALL

• Sardinha honored: Bronson Sardinha, an all-state shortstop from Kamehameha, was named to the National High School Baseball Coaches Association all-District 8 (Alaska, California, Hawai'i, Oregon and Washington) team, according to the organization.

Sardinha, the 34th overall pick by the New York Yankees in last month's draft, was batting .325 with the club's rookie affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He signed a bonus worth $1 million.

Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Sardinha's brother, Dane, a catcher at Single-A Mudville (Stockton, Calif.) might get recalled by the Cincinnati Reds if backup catcher Kelly Stinnett is placed on the disabled list. Dane signed a major league contract when he was a second-round selection in the 2000 draft and was required to be put on the Reds' 40-man roster. Dane was batting .225 with four home runs and 35 RBIs.

The Enquirer added that Triple-A catcher Corky Miller might get the call. Since his contract must be purchased from Louisville, the Reds would have to clear a spot on their 40-man roster. Miller was batting .371.

The Reds' starting catcher is Jason LaRue.
