Violette Verdy, a prima ballerina under George Balanchine at the New York City Ballet, will offer an open master class from 1 to 2 p.m. Aug.4 at Ballet Hawai'i's Studio on the second floor of Dole Cannery, 650 Iwilei Road.

The French-born Verdy, who guest-starred with every major ballet company throughout the world, has been a mentor of Hawai'i's Amanda Schull, beginning with the time Schull attended Indiana University, where Verdy is a professor of ballet. She also has worked with Schull before the dancer joined the San Francisco Ballet and her subsequent starring role in the film, "Center Stage."

The class is at the intermediate-advanced level and requires pointe shoes for female dancers.

Cost: $15.

Registration: Ballet Hawai'i at 521-8600.
