Police frustrated in search for Waikiki nightclub promoter

By Jessica Webster

The search for a 29-year-old Waikiki nightclub promoter who disappeared after a bar fight one year ago continues, but police say they are no closer to finding him.

Carlos Carrillo has been missing for one year.

Honolulu Police Department

Carlos Carrillo was last seen by his girlfriend on July 4, 2000, in a nightclub formerly known as Evolution Waikiki at 478 Ena Road.

Police said Carrillo vanished following a fight over a girl with a 30-year-old bouncer.

Helicopter searches, landfill digs and extensive site examinations of the bar have turned up few clues, said Lt. Bill Kato, with the Honolulu Police Department's criminal investigations unit.

Kato said they are still awaiting lab results on blood- and vomit-stained carpeting taken from a trash bin near the bar, and another carpet taken from the Waimanalo Gulch landfill.

"This is still a missing person case, not a homicide," said Kato. "We're actively pursuing it, and it's an open case — but not many leads have come in since he went missing."

Carrillo is a former resident of California, and police said none of Carrillo's Mainland friends or relatives has heard from him.

Carrillo's girlfriend told police last year that Carrillo called her on the morning of July 4 and told her to pick him up because he was drunk, police said. When she arrived at the club, she said the bouncer took her upstairs and put her in a booth where she couldn't see what was happening in the room.

She told police she heard cries of "I'm sorry" and thuds. That's when the bouncer came out of the room and put her into a car that drove her around Pearl City for a few hours, police said.

Police said the girlfriend called them several hours later.

Police arrested the Nanakuli bouncer on July 6. The man admitted fighting with Carrillo and said he drove Carrillo to Honolulu International Airport at Carrillo's request.

But police did not find Carrillo's name listed on any of the flights.

The bouncer was not charged and was later released.

Kato said this is not a "typical" missing person's case.

Police describe Carrillo as 5-foot-10, 180 pounds with a medium build, fair complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He was wearing a white undershirt, black pants and white Puma shoes.

Police are asking the public to report anything suspicious they might have seen on or around July 4, 2000, particularly on a shoreline or in a secluded area.

Anyone with information on Carlos Carrillo may call Crime Stoppers at 955-8300.
