Electrical problem blamed for Happy Valley Cafe fire

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — An electrical problem is the suspected cause of a July 18 fire that gutted the Happy Valley Cafe, said Maui Fire Department Capt. Neal Bal.

The old wood-and-tin structure on North Market Street was the former home of Sam Sato's noodle house and other restaurants and bars over the years.

Building co-owner Charles Toma said yesterday he is waiting for information from his insurance company before making plans for the site.

Meanwhile, Happy Valley Cafe owners Paul and Freda Connelly are selling a griddlestove, stockpot burner, dishes, dining room tables and other items salvaged from the fire. Paul Connelly said yesterday that the business was underinsured, and the couple will end up losing $20,000 from the disaster.

They are deciding whether to give it a go at another location, he said.

A "Friends of Happy Valley Cafe" account has been set up at American Savings Bank to assist the Connellys. For information on the items being sold, call (808) 579-9824.
