Kalakaua teacher is trivia champion

Mo'ili'ili's Brian Viola, 42, a physical education teacher at Kalakaua Middle School, proved that trivia is not trivial.

Brian Viola, winner of the KCCN/Honolulu Advertiser Ultimate Sports Trivia Challenge, wins a trip for two to Reno.
Viola earned a free trip to Reno by winning the KCCN/Honolulu Advertiser Ultimate Sports Trivia Challenge last night at the Hawai'i Outdoor Sports Expo at the Blaisdell Arena.

Viola defeated Honolulu's Jim Araki, 5-3, in the championship and will receive a trip for two and four nights accommodations from Royal Adventure Travel.

"I'm excited," Viola said. "I'm looking forward to this trip to Reno."

Viola was a near winner of this contest two years ago. He was a correct answer away from winning but missed a question regarding skier Spider Sabich.

He answered "Tiger Sabich." Under contest rules, had he given just the last name, he would have won.

"I was crushed," he said. "It was for the World Series and I'm a baseball fanatic.

"I had to live with it for two years. I felt like the Bill Buckner of trivia contests."

Araki got a roundtrip for two to Maui on Aloha Airlines with two nights accommodations at Sheraton Maui and tickets to the University of Hawai'i football game against Montana Sept. 8.
