Hula halau from Honolulu and Guam were the two top scorers in the 26th annual Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition, a three-day event that ended yesterday at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.
For the third year in a row, Hula Halau 'O Kamuela, the Honolulu school led by kumu hula Paleka Mattos, swept the awards in the kaikamahine (girls) division for kahiko (ancient) and 'auana (contemporary) hula categories.
The halau also won the Hawaiian language award in the halau division, in which adult chanters may compete. And both its solo contenders were chosen for the Miss and Master Keiki Hula titles: Jasmine Dunlap and Albert Padron.
The keiki division award for all-children chanters went to Halau Mohala 'Ilima.
This is the first year that a frequent Keiki Hula competitor, Benjie Santiago's Hula Halau 'O Kaleolani from Hagatna, Guam, finished on top in the keikikane (boys) division.
The Guam school placed second to Halau Hula Olana and Halau Hula 'O Hokulani in kahiko and 'auana, respectively. But its combined score was enough to win the trophy for overall performance.
