The city parks budget plummeted by more than a third from 1998 to 2000 but has since grown steadily along with more money for larger city parks and a city emphasis on park improvements.

The state parks system was operating with an annual budget of about $9.5 million in 1994, but that was slashed because of big budget cutbacks in the mid-1990s, said Dan Quinn, state parks administrator for the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Money is slowly returning, he said.
