Ex-Islander bringing team from Utah here

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Former Leilehua and 'Aiea football coach Gary Clark will return to Aloha Stadium sidelines this season.

Clark is in his third year as an assistant at Timpview (Provo, Utah), which will play Kamehameha at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 24 in a non-league football game.

"It's a good opportunity for us to come down to the Islands and expose some of our kids to the culture and the different brand of football," Clark said in telephone interview. "Hawai'i is known for playing good football and we want to play a good football team."

Clark coached at 'Aiea from 1982-1986 and at Leilehua from 1987-1994 before moving to Arizona, where he coached at Hopi High in Keams Canyon before moving to Utah.

Clark was here in 1999, when he was honored as the NFL's national high school coach of the year at the Pro Bowl. He was nominated by his former player at Leilehua, running back Adrian Murrell. Clark said he has been invited to the NFL Hall of Fame inductions this weekend.

Timpview was 11-1 in Utah's 4A class (second highest in terms of enrollment), suffering its only loss in the state semifinals.

Skyline (5A in Salt Lake City) will visit defending state champion Kahuku on Aug. 17. Last year, Skyline beat Kahuku, 24-21, in Utah.

Also, Kailua will play Snow Canyon at St. George, Utah. Snow Canyon was Utah's 3A champion in 1999.

Other Mainland teams coming to Hawai'i are Alaska's A.J. Diamond (at Wai'anae on Aug. 18), and California teams Kearny (at Iolani on Aug. 24) and Dana Hills (vs. Pac-Five on Aug. 25).

The non-league schedule also features the annual Father Bray Classic, which will feature four games on Aug. 18 at Aloha Stadium. The host Raiders will play Kaimuki at 7:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, Iolani and Punahou will meet in a non-league game Sept. 28 at Punahou. Because they are in different classifications in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, only a previously scheduled Nov. 2 game will count in the standings.
