Dwyer shoots 79 in U.S. Amateur golf

Bridget Dwyer, a 1999 Punahou School graduate, shot an 8-over-par 79 yesterday in the opening round of the 101st U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Andover, Kan.

Dwyer, who plans to rejoin the UCLA golf team in the fall, shot nines of 39-40 at the 6,224-yard Flint Hills National Golf Club.

Recent high school graduates Merynn Ito of 'Aiea and Joan Shimozaki of Seabury Hall are also in the field. Ito opened with an 83 and Shimozaki shot 85.

Celeste Troche of Paraguay, who attends Auburn University, shot a 2-under 69 in 103-degree heat to take a one-stroke lead in the stroke-play qualifying.

The 144-player field will be cut to the low 64 for match play after today's round.


SOFTBALL

• UHH signs recruits: University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball coach Callen Perreira is buoyed by this year's recruiting class and adds that the "definite jewels are Wendy Layton and Tara Martinez."

Layton, a two-time first-team junior college All-American, leaves Shasta Community College (Redding, Calif.) with career records for hits (126), singles (81), doubles (25), extra-base hits (45), runs (84), at-bats (317) and total bases (472).

Martinez played for Rancho Cucamonga High, which won the California Interscholastic Federation Division I championship. She had a 6-1 pitching record and 0.18 ERA.

The other recruits are Kelly Moore of Delta College (Stockton, Calif.), who was a second-team All-American after batting .423; Molly Liston, a two-time all-state pitcher from Roseburg, Ore.; Tanya Sing Chow, a power hitter who is transferring from Hawai'i Pacific; and Brandy Smith, a transfer from Howard College in Texas, where she earned all-conference honors.


BASEBALL

• Movers hosting tournament: The Hawai'i Island Movers will play host to the Hawai'i International Baseball Championship Tournament, which runs Aug. 6-9 at Rainbow Stadium.

Other teams in the tournament are Tohoku Fukushi University, the Shuto University All-Stars and the Guam National Team.

Tohoku Fukushi is the alma mater of Seattle Mariners closer Kazuhiro Sasaki, while the Shuto All-Stars will have players from Tokai University, the Japan national champion. The Guam team competes against teams from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Micronesia for a spot in the Olympics.

Aug. 6: Tohoku Fukushi vs. Shuto, 3 p.m.; Island Movers vs. Guam, 6:30 p.m.
Aug. 7: Guam vs. Tohoku, 3 p.m.; Shuto vs. Island Movers, 6:30 p.m.
Aug. 8: Shuto vs. Guam, 3 p.m.; Island Movers vs. Tohoku, 6:30 p.m.
Aug. 9: No. 3 vs. No. 4, 3 p.m.; No. 1 vs. No. 2, 6:30 p.m.

• Little League winners: Christian Johnson and Blaze Moleta each had two hits and three RBIs to lead 'Aiea past Alaska, 6-2, yesterday in a Little League Junior (ages 13-14) Divisional Tournament game at Salem, Oregon.

Winning pitcher Lance Powell worked a complete game.

Today, 'Aiea (1-1) will play Washington, which beat the Hawai'i team, 9-2, in the double-elimination tournament opener on Saturday.

Also yesterday, Maui defeated Alaska, 4-3, in a Little League Senior (ages 14-16) Divisional Tournament game at Vancouver, Wash.


TENNIS

• Upset at Kailua: Chad Shibuya and Gregg Takata rallied to upset the fourth-seeded team of David Lam and Peter Sohn, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6), last night at the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles.

In other matches, the second-seeded team of Chris Leong and Ryan Livsay defeated Michael Burger and Charlie Panui, 6-2, 6-3, and Erik Sandblom and Daouda Senge Ndiaye ousted Brett Kruger and Charlie Swift, 6-3, 7-5.

Competition continues tonight.
