Summer sessions in dance

Amanda Schull, who starred in the ballet-themed movie "Center Stage," will teach at the summer dance sessions.

Amanda Schull (star of "Center Stage") and Alaine Haubert (co-director of the American Ballet Theatre's Summer Intensive) will teach classes in Ballet Hawaii's Summer of Dance series June 11 to 23.

Haubert will teach 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 11 to 15, 6:30-8 p.m. June 18 to 21, and 10 a.m.-noon June 22. Schull will teach 6:30-8 p.m. June 22 and an extra class 1-2:30 p.m. June 23. Each class is $15.

Summer Intensive 2001 offers three weeks of highly focused ballet training from July 30 to Aug. 18 for intermediate and advanced dancers, with instruction in technique, jazz, modern, pointe, floor barre, pilates, even some hula.

Classes are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with rehearsals until about 5:30 p.m. The three-week session concludes with a performance on Saturday, Aug. 17. Teachers include Violette Verdy, Robert Barnett, Maria Vegh and Michael Vernon. Cost is $775.

The Seminar for Teachers is slated for Aug. 11 and 12 led by Vegh, a ballet instructor and author of the book "To Dance." Classes are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and 11 a.m. Aug. 12. Cost is $150.

All classes are held at the Ballet Hawaii studios at the Dole Cannery Outlet Center, 650 Iwilei Road.
