Golf event to aid Kapolei

A golf tournament to benefit the Kapolei High School athletic program will be held July 6 at the Kapolei Golf Course.

Single entries are $125 and teams of three are $375. The entry fee includes a bento lunch, dinner after the event and door prizes. Proceeds will be used to provide bus transportation for Kapolei High teams to participate in sporting events.

Kapolei athletic director Elden Esmeralda said the school spends twice as much as other schools, this year $10,000, on team transportation because it cannot hold home games in some sports.

The school has not had a gym or locker rooms since it opened last year and consequently all of its football, basketball and volleyball games are held at other facilities.

For more information, call Esmeralda at 478-1140.

Open markets to start in July

Two new people's open markets, one in Kapolei, another in Royal Kunia, are scheduled to join the city's 22 other locations July 1.

The Kapolei market will be located at Kapolei Community Park, 91-1049 Kamaaha Loop. It will be open from 7 to 8:30 a.m. every Sunday starting July 1.

The Royal Kunia site will be at the Royal Kunia park and ride facility, corner of Kupuna Loop and Kupuohi Street from 9:30 a.m. to noon every Sunday.

A brief city ceremony will be held July 1 prior to the official opening of the markets.

The People's Open Market program was established in 1973 to provide the public with low-cost fresh food surplus items, to support the state's diversified agriculture and aquaculture and to provide seniors with a gathering place.
