Wahine distance runner Smith 12th at NCAA championships

University of Hawai'i junior Cheryl Smith finished 12th in the 10,000-meter run yesterday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Smith, a transfer from Division III SUNY-Cortland, finished the 25-lap race in 36 minutes, 1.41 seconds in her debut at the Division I championship meet. She was the only UH athlete to qualify.

Amy Yoder-Begley of Arkansas won the event in 33:59.


ALOHA GAMES

Kickoff tomorrow: Opening ceremonies of the 2001 Aloha State Games will be held tomorrow at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 9 p.m. In addition to a dozen entertainment acts — from gospel singers to military bands — there will be pony rides, a petting zoo, bouncers for the children, a 2-on-2 basketball challenge and slam-dunk contest (8 feet and 9 feet) for youth and adults, plus food booths and carnival games.

Participants in the 12th Aloha Games can pick up entry packets and T-shirts at the park, starting at noon. Entries are still open with no late penalty fee.

KITE SURFING

Kailua dominates: Jeff Tobias of Kailua won the inaugural World Ocean Games Kite Surfing Championship yesterday at Mokul«'ia Beach Park.

Tobias, 24, earned $400 for the victory. In a four-man final comprised entirely of Kailua residents, Des Walsh placed second, followed by Stephen Whitesell and Alan Joaquin.

Another Kailua competitor, Sheldon Plentovich, won the women's division. Marigold Zoll of O'ahu's North Shore placed second.

In kite surfing, each competitor rides a surfboard, but also holds on to a kite to provide speed and power for aerial maneuvers.


SOCCER

Spring final: The spring-season championship match for the Men's Island Soccer Organization (MISO) will be played Sunday at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

Lanikai Tuesday meets Army Hawaii for third place at noon and the HPU Warriors will face the Hellions for the title at 2 p.m.

The first season of MISO Masters, the new over-45 years division, ends tonight. The Silver Strikers have clinched the championship but tonight's games at Ala Wai field will decide second and third place.

The Honolulu Casuals, who have 15 points, play the Kailua Old Boys (13 points) at 6 and the Silver Strikers (21 points) meet the Ohana Masters (12 points) at 7:45. The trophy presentation will follow.
