Club offers trail maintenance, hikes

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaiian Trail & Mountain Club holds trail maintenance and trail hikes throughout the year.

For hikes, meet at 'Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 a.m. unless noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044.

A $2 donation is required for each nonmember, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map. Firearms, pets, radioes and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

For information, call 674-1459, 377-5442, 596-4864 or check the Web site at www.geocities.com/htmclub/; htmc.u4l.com; www.webalias.com/htmc/

The upcoming schedule:

• June 2—8 a.m., members only Kaua. (6 miles, intermediate, ridge, Kunia). To reduce the negative impact and potential damage to this sensitive area, the number of hikers is limited to 15. Coordinator Phil Booth, 488-1161.

• June 3—8 a.m. Schofield-Waikane. (9 miles, advanced, ridge, Wahiawa). Schofield-Waikane is one of the great trans-Ko'olau routes. The side valleys are home to a remnant 'i'iwi population. Coordinator Grant Oka, 674-1459.

• June 9—5 p.m. Clubhouse. Potluck begins at 5 p.m. followed by a slide show at 7. The slide show is titled "Where the Trail Meets the Air: Paragliding in Paradise." A brief discussion of the theory of portable flight and the equipment used by para-hikers will be included. Information: Karen Hashimoto, 524-7473, or e-mail hashimoto@hawaii.com
