Animal Companions
Kitty more than just a 'house cat'

By the Hawaiian Humane Society

June is Love-A-Cat month. Here's a little kitty trivia in honor of the most common house pet in America:

  • What's in a cat? According to britannica.com: "cat, domestic also called house cat, (species Felis catus), domesticated member of the family Felidae, order Carnivora. Like all felids, domestic cats, the smallest members of the family, are characterized by supple, low-slung bodies, finely molded heads, long tails that aid in balance and specialized teeth and claws that adapt them admirably to a life of active hunting. Domestic cats possess other features of their wild relatives in being basically carnivorous, remarkably agile and powerful, and finely coordinated in movement."
  • Anthony Hopkins on how cats influenced him in preparing for his role in "Hannibal": "I sort of modeled my walk on a cat's. I like cats, and I love the way they pad around. I wanted to get that feel when Lecter is padding very quietly and stealthily in the shadows around the streets of Florence."
  • The original title of Charlie's Angels was "The Alley Cats."
  • A cat by any other name. ... Here's what cats are called in various languages: Chinese — mao; French — chat; Filipino — pusa; Finnish — kissa; German — katze; Hawaiian — popoki; Italian — gatto; Japanese — neko; Portuguese/Spanish — gato; Thai/Vietnamese — meo.
  • Appropriately, "Cats" had more lives than any musical on Broadway. It opened at the Winter Garden Theater in 1982 and closed in 2000.

Adoptables

Kittens!

Room 4 of the Hawaiian Humane Society Cat House is crawling with kittens of all types, colors and personalities, so we couldn't pick just one kitten as this week's adoptable. And you don't have to choose just one, because the double adoption option during June allows you to adopt two felines and pay just one adoption fee. Every cat or kitten is already sterilized, vaccinated, has a microchip ID and a free exam by a veterinarian, all for the $50 fee.

Fly

Tag No. 78179

He looks so much like Fly in the movie "Babe" that we call this 4-year-old male border collie by that name. He's typical of his high-energy breed and would like room to run. Fly needs treatment for heartworms and a loving family.
