City to expand One'ula park
City officials plan to pump $7 million into expanding and redeveloping One'ula Beach Park in 'Ewa.
The officials hope the improvements will lure families to the isolated park, which is currently noted for junked cars and drug dealing.
Rae Loui, director of the Department of Design and Construction, said work on Phase I of the plan will begin this year. It includes realigning the access road and moving the parks multipurpose field.
Phase II will add 9.3 acres to the park for a multipurpose center, picnic and camping sites, restrooms and parking. That work is set to start at the beginning of next year.
Loui said the major component of the plan is the multipurpose center, which area residents want to use for ocean education classes.
Kalua'a Gulch fence going up
The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i plans to erect a fence to protect the habitat of rare and endangered species in central Kalua'a Gulch in its Honouliuli Preserve in the southern Wai'anae Mountains.
The fence will protect wild or reintroduced populations of an endangered bird, 24 endangered plants or plant species of concern and 10 rare snails and insects.
The fence is intended to keep out feral pigs and goats.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is providing money to support the fence project. Construction is scheduled to begin this month and be completed by the end of the year. A contractor, conservancy staff and volunteers will install the fence. Volunteers are being sought to help in all aspects of the project.
The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i is a local chapter of an international, nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting plants, animals and natural communities by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
For more information about this project or to volunteer, contact the conservancy at 621-2008.
