Kailua wins tight canoe racing opener

Where it goes from there is anybody's guess.

Parity emerged as the theme of the Clement D. Paiaina Regatta yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon. By day's end, Kailua emerged as the most consistent.

"I think this is great for the sport," said Kailua head coach Donovan Leandro. "Now we know there's four clubs out there that can take it every week."

Kailua amassed 71 points over 36 races to edge Outrigger (67), defending state champion Lanikai (65) and Hui Nalu (60).

Keahiakahoe won the A division for smaller clubs with 17 points.

"I think our key was scoring points throughout the day," Leandro said.

Each of the OHCRA's "big four" clubs held the lead at one time or another during the regatta.

Kailua seized it for good after winning the 32nd race of the day — men's open-4. It was one of seven race victories for Kailua. Lanikai and Hui Nalu also won seven each, while Outrigger won six.

"Every team has strong paddlers, and it seemed like every race was close," Outrigger head coach Kehau Kali said. "It certainly creates a lot of excitement."

Early on, it appeared Lanikai would continue its momentum from last year's state championship. Lanikai scored 37 points in the 13 youth races, including five victories (girls 12s, boys 12s, girls 13s, boys 13s and boys 15s).

"Our kids did a lot more that we could have expected from them," Lanikai head coach John Foti said. "They carried the day, for sure."

Surprisingly, though, Lanikai's perennially powerful men's crews "fell flat," according to Foti. Of particular significance, Lanikai did not win any of the five open men's races.

"This was probably the worst showing by our upper division men in eight or nine years," said Foti, who is also a key paddler in that group.

Hui Lanakila upset Lanikai in the prestigious men's senior race. Lanikai is the nine-time defending state champion in that division.

The Hui Lanakila crew of Raven Aipa, Eddie McGowan, Tomas Schlotman, Greg Poole, Jim Hewitt and Kalama Heine completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 10 minutes, 49.79 seconds to edge Lanikai by two seconds.

Heine steered the canoe to three textbook turns around the buoys, helping the crew gain valuable seconds.

"I think that's where we nipped them," Heine said. "We gained probably about a boat length."

Five of the six Hui Lanakila paddlers are eligible for the masters division, meaning they are 35 and older.

"We're happy with this one," Heine said. "But not too happy because we know (Lanikai is) going to be gunning for us every week now."

Hui Nalu won the women's senior race, continuing a streak it started last season. The crew of Kelly Wong, Nikki Queyrel, Julie Aio, Gail Kaaialii, Ginger Lockette and Kaui Pelekane completed the 1 1/2-mile course in 13:07.07.

Kailua also received a clutch performance from its women, winning the sophomore and junior races while placing a close second to Hui Nalu in the seniors.

"Our women are definitely on the rise," Leandro said. "They've been building since last year."

Outrigger gained victories from its boys (14s and 18s), girls (15s), men (novice A and junior) and masters women (35-older). However, two false-start disqualifications — resulting in a loss of 10 points — proved costly.

"That's part of paddling," Kali said. "We still feel like we got a strong second, and we're pleased with that."

Hui Lanakila placed fifth overall with 44 points, while the host club, Healani, was sixth with 34.

Hui Wa'a: The Lokahi Canoe Club earned its first victory of the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a season, winning the Kane'ohe Canoe Club Regatta yesterday at Waimanalo Beach Park.

Lokahi won 10 of the 36 races, and finished with 80 points. Kane'ohe, which won the season-opening regatta last week, placed second with eight race victories and 67 points.

As usual, Kane'ohe opened strong in the youth races, winning the boys 12s, girls 13s, boys 13s, boys 14s, girls 15s and girls 18s.

Lokahi responded with solid performances from its women and masters crews. Lokahi won the women's freshman, sophomore and senior races, and also took top honors in the mixed masters (40-older), men's masters (35-older), men's senior masters (45-older) and women's golden masters (55-older).

Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i won the A division for smaller clubs with 34 points. I Mua was second with 25.

Koa Kai placed fourth in the A division, but won the prestigious men's senior race.
