Advertiser Staff
The goods news is they made the championship division; the bad new is they're in last place.
The University of Hawai'i co-ed sailors lost all five of their first-round races in the championship division yesterday at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association/Ronstan North American Team Racing Championships in Cambridge, Mass.
Earlier in the day, UH went 4-1 to complete round-robin racing with an 8-3 record. UH then advanced to the championship division, along with five other schools, but went 0-5 in the first round. UH is 8-8 overall, tied with Old Dominion.
Georgetown leads the championship division with a 14-2 record, followed by Harvard and Dartmouth at 13-3, and Charleston at 10-6.
Competition concludes today.
TRIATHLON
Ready to roll: The Honolulu International Triathlon is back on the race schedule.
The event, which will be held June 10 starting at 7 a.m., features a 1,500 meter swim in Waikiki, a 55 kilometer (about 35 miles) bike ride, and a 15-kilometer (9.3 miles) run.
Participants will set up their transition areas at Kapi'olani Park, then walk to the Duke Kahanamoku statue for the swim start, which race director Chet "the Jet" Blanton said will take athletes far outside the surf zone. The bike ride starts at Kapi'olani Park, heads out Kalaniana'ole Highway, and makes two loops around Koko Head Crater before returning to the park.
Instead of two loops around Diamond Head, the new run course travels along Kahala Avenue, past Waialae Country Club toward the gas station. Blanton said this out-and-back route will allow the leaders to keep track of their competition more effectively. Athletes finish at Kapi'olani Park.
One way to enjoy the experience without attempting the entire event is to participate on a three-person team, where each member completes one segment.
Packet pick-up is at the Running Room on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry fee is $70, plus $7 for a one-day Tri-Fed license. For information, call Blanton at 941-6485.
