Artists celebrate law with 'digital jam'

Henry Kapono, shown here in a streaming video on the Web, will be among the performers at "Hawaii Digital Jam" at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Hawai'i has just improved its digital economy, according to performing artists who hope to make a living in it, so they figure: What better reason to celebrate?

The "Hawaii Digital Jam" is a concert party in honor of the governor and the Legislature (can you think of anyone cheering for them lately?) for authorizing Act 297. The law provides an incentive to artists by exempting from state income taxes the royalties they earn on CDs, MP3s, television and motion picture products.

The festivities are set for 5-10 p.m. Friday at Kapono's, Aloha Tower Marketplace. Not surprisingly, Henry Kapono is among the headliners; others will include Willie K, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Keali'i Reichel, Robi Kahakalau, Kalapana and Barry Flanagan.

Tickets are free, except it takes a little doing to get them. Radio stations KCCN, KINE, KRTR and KXME are giving them away. Failing that, music lovers can attend the live cyber-cast (www.hawaiidigitaljam.com). The site offers a link to download Windows Media Player 7, needed to view the video; that's also free, but it's not compatible with Windows 95 or NT4.

Better not let a free concert cost you the health of your computer.
