Off the Shelf
A guide to ingredients

By Joan Namkoong

Halo halo is a refreshing Filipino version of shaved ice, usually made with "sweet mix," found in jars in the ethnic section of supermarkets or at Filipino food stores. The interesting mix includes red mung beans, white beans, banana, sugar palm, coconut gel, jackfruit and sugar water. Shaved ice is layered with the sweet mix, creating an icy fruit cocktail that is then drizzled with coconut milk or sweetened condensed milk. Some folks grate cantaloupe over it all. Excellent on a hot day. The individual ingredients are sold separately in jars, too.
