O'ahu bus riders will soon have more shade while waiting: The city last month began building another 140 shelters around the island.
The contracts, totaling $2.4 million, were awarded to Preferred Constructors and Iida Contracting.
Costa said each new shelter costs $8,000 to $10,000 depending on size and location.
"They're a little smaller than the ones we had in the past, and we tried to give it a tropical look," she said.
Costa said the contractors are concentrating on constructing new shelters along city streets while they await permission to build the structures along state highways and roads.
The city is still soliciting Lions Club members and other community groups to help build and renovate larger bus shelters on a volunteer basis.
