Castle grad Wilson to play in U.S. Open

Dean Wilson, a Castle High graduate now living in Orem, Utah, has qualified for the U.S. Open golf championship.

Dean Wilson qualifies in Ohio with 138 total.

The U.S. Open, where Tiger Woods is the defending champion, will be held June 14-17 in Tulsa, Okla.

Wilson shot 67-71—138 last weekend at a sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio, where 120 golfers competed for 26 qualifying spots.

Wilson, a former Kane'ohe resident, tied for 12th overall.

Gary Nicklaus, son of Hall of Famer and four-time U.S. Open champion Jack Nicklaus, was the medalist with 66-66—132. Also qualifying were Fred Couples (69-66—135) and Bob Tway (68-69—137).

Meanwhile, Punahou School graduates Jim Seki of Stanford and Parker McLachlin of UCLA failed in sectional qualifying at Tarzana, Calif.

Seki shot 72-71—143 and McLachlin shot 74-74—148. Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand led four qualifiers from the 76-player field with 71-67—138.
