Asao brothers advance to Manoa Cup quarterfinals

The Asao brothers, Norman-Ganin and Kellen-Floyd, advanced to the quarterfinals, while defending champion Randy Shibuya was ousted yesterday in the rain-delayed 93rd Manoa Cup at O'ahu Country Club.

Shibuya lost in the second round to Troy Higashiyama, 4 and 3. Higashiyama later lost in the afternoon third round to Paul Kimura (2 and 1), who defeated Blaine Kimura (no relation), 5 and 3, in the morning's second round.

Norman-Ganin Asao defeated Christian Akau, the reigning Interscholastic League of Honolulu individual champion, 2-up in the second round, then ousted Don Look, 5 and 4, in the afternoon.

Kellen-Floyd, the younger of the two Asaos, beat Garrett Okamura, 2 and 1, and Phillip Anamizu, 1-up.

Also reaching today's quarterfinals were Christopher Caycayon, Eric Fong, Joe Phengsavath, Ryan Koshi and former State Amateur champion Jonathan Ota.

Caycayon defeated Toby Martyn, 2-up, and Gary Kong, 3 and 2; and Fong ousted John Bascuk, 5 and 4, and Tommy Kim, 1-up on the 19th hole. Caycayon will play Kimura and Fong takes on Kellen-Floyd Asao in upper bracket matches.

In the lower half, Phengsavath plays Koshi and Norman-Ganin Asao faces Ota.

Phengsavath had victories over Ralph Dewitt (3 and 2) and Travis Toyama (1-up on the 20th), Koshi defeated Jeff Weinstein (7 and 6) and Eric Molina (2 and 1), and Ota beat Ross Mitsutani (1-up) and Raymond Tendo (1-up on 19th).

The quarterfinals begin at 7 a.m. this morning. The semifinals tee off at 7 a.m. tomorrow, with the 36-hole final on Saturday starting at 7 a.m.
