UH sailors in sixth at nationals

The University of Hawai'i was in sixth place after the first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Coed Dinghy Championships at Pt. Judith Harbor on Rhode Island Sound.

Boston College leads the 18-school field with a low-best score of 37 after four of the 18 scheduled races in the three-day event. Harvard (48) was second, followed by College of Charleston, Tufts and Georgetown, all with 51.

Hawai'i has 54 points. Senior skipper Josh Henrich and the crew of sophomore Sarah Hitchcock and freshman Ann Feeley-Summerl had 29 points and were fifth in A division. They won the second race of the day and finished second in the final race.

Senior skipper Brent Harrill and freshman crew Jennifer Warnock had 25 points and were fifth in B division. They finished second in the third race and fourth in the fourth race.


SOFTBALL

Chaminade hires coach: Walter Ka'aihili has been hired as softball coach at Chaminade University.

Ka'aihili succeeds Allison Nihei, who stepped down after last season.

Ka'aihili has coached youth softball in Hawai'i for 17 years, and has also been an assistant at Kaiser High and Kamehameha School.


Wahine camp set: University of Hawai'i coach Bob Coolen, along with his staff and current and former players, will hold one camp for younger girls and one for older girls this summer.

The first, for players ages 8-12, will be June 13-15, from 4-7 p.m. The second, June 18-20 from 9 a.m. to noon, is for players 13-18. Cost is $75 for each session, which includes a T-shirt and inclusion on the Lil'Booster mailing list.

Each camp covers the basic fundamentals taught to the Wahine.

AWARDS

Triple threat: Three Hilo High track and field athletes who captured state gold medals on Maui last month shared the Big Island Athlete of the Month award for May.

Sprinter Jonathan Peralto, jumper Ikaika Tsukiyama and pole vaulter Nicolette Rowe became the first tri winners in the 18-year history of the program, now sponsored by Don's Grill.

Peralto won the 400 meters in 48.8 seconds, Tsukiyama took the long jump with a leap of 20 feet and 11¥ inches, and Rowe vaulted 10 feet, 6 inches. The three also won Big Island championships in their events.
