World champ to guest pose at Blaisdell

The 23rd annual Hawaiian Islands Bodybuilding Championship, a national qualifying event, will be held June 23 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Guest posers will be Gunter Schlierkamp, Victor Martinez and Beth Horn.

Schlierkamp, 6 feet 1 and 290 pounds, is a World Champion. Martinez is the 2000 National Physique Committee's overall champion.

Horn has a degree in exercise physiology from Ball State University. She broke two bones in her right foot during the 2000 Team Universe competition, but returned just eight weeks later to win the 2000 National Fitness Championships.

The competition is sanctioned by the National Physique Committee and features Hawai'i's best bodybuilders.

The winner will qualify for any national meet.

Part of the event will be the Junior Hawaiian Islands Championship, the over 35 Master's Championship and the women's Hawai'i Fitness Contest.

NOTES: Tommy Kono, Olympic weightlifting champion, and Timmy Leong, the first contestant to represent Hawai'i in a Mr. America contest, will be honored at the event. ... Contortionist Daniel Browning Smith and Janel Parrish, 12, an accomplished Broadway performer, will provide entertainment. ... Tickets are $41, $36, $31, $26 and $21, with all seats reserved. Tickets are available at Mits' Basic Foods, Inc., 24 Hour Fitness-Kapi'olani and Mililani, Hawai'i Athletic Club, Golds' Gym, Ticket Outlets and Blaisdell. Tickets also will be on sale at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on June 23.
