Lanikai wins King Kamehameha canoe regatta

Lanikai made the most of a second chance and left the competition bobbing in its wake down the stretch to take first place at yesterday's King Kamehameha Regatta at Kailua Beach.

On a day marred by miscues and malfunctions, confusion at the start of the men's sophomore race proved to be pivotal.

In the previous race, a canoe manned by Leeward Kai swamped and was unable to finish. The boat was still in the water though outside of the racing area as officials prepared to start the next race.
Crews from Lanikai, Hui Lanakila, Healani and Makaha said they thought the start would be delayed until the Leeward Kai boat returned to shore and therefore stayed behind the start line. Several crew members from the clubs said they did not see the yellow flag on the escort boat indicating the five-minute countdown to the start.
"We thought, you know, prudence — safety first, right?" said Hui Lanakila paddler Mike Lum. "The yellow flag went up, but then it went down and it wasn't visible. That told us they were going to start the count again after the course was cleared. We were in relax mode."
Only three teams — Hui Nalu, Outrigger and Kailua — were at the start line when the race began. The other four boats were between 20 and 100 yards from the start, with Lanikai in the worst position.
"We were about 100 yards back and facing the opposite direction," said Lanikai head coach John Foti. "We were just paddling slowly and turning then, lo and behold, the race started. We were 130 yards back when we finally turned around."
Hui Nalu completed the 1-mile race first, followed by Outrigger, Hui Lanakila and Healani. Lanikai finished fifth, followed by Kailua and Makaha.
However, after protests were filed by Lanakila and other teams after the race, O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association officials and the rules committee decided to re-run the race. The officials determined that no rules were broken with the start, but, in the interest of fairness, the parties agreed to throw out the race and allow teams to resubmit entries for the re-do, which was slotted after event No. 30 to allow as many of the original paddlers to compete.
Outrigger paddler John Eveleth and others disagreed with the decision.
"That's racing," he said. "If you're not ready, you can't cry and say I wasn't ready. If I was on that crew, I'd be (upset) at my own guys for not being prepared. We did what we were supposed to do. The race is over."
Lanikai edged Hui Nalu by less than two seconds in the rematch. Hui Lanakila and Healani retained their third- and fourth-place finishes, followed by Outrigger and Kailua. Makaha opted not to compete.
Lanikai, which narrowly led Outrigger after failing to earn a point in the original race, earned five points for the re-do victory.
"Before that race, it was really tight the whole time," Foti said. "We made too many mistakes today but I feel great about the way things worked out for us. We were really lucky."
Buoyed by the reversal of fortune, Lanikai finished the day strong and wound up with 87 total points to win the AA Division. Outrigger placed second with 70, followed by Kailua (68).
Waikiki Surf, which was disqualified from one race for a false start, won the A division with 16 points, narrowly beating Keahiakahoe (14).
"Total vindication," said Lanikai paddler Jim Foti after the make-up race. "This is vindication not just for today, but for last week when we just fell on our face."
Lanikai, the defending state champion, finished third in last week's Clement D. Paiaaina Regatta, which was won by Kailua.
Said Reney Ching, acting coach for Hui Nalu: "I'm not real pleased with the re-racing, but we had to do what was best for everybody."
It was a difficult day for most of the competing clubs. In addition to unrelenting southwesterly winds, there were 10 disqualifications and five huli.
