BIG ISLAND

Mauled woman reported improving

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Hawai'i — The condition of a young mother mauled by a pit bull Saturday trying to save her young son from the dog, has been upgraded to guarded, said a spokesperson from Hilo Medical Center.

Luana Moniz, 24, has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit to a general floor of the hospital, the spokesperson said.

Moniz was admitted to the hospital Saturday night in serious condition after trying to get her son, Tyran Moniz-Hilderbrand, away from the 80-pound dog. The dog turned on her as she unsuccessfully tried to rescue the child who was mauled to death. The mother's right arm was severely damaged.

Moniz was saved by the arrival of the child's father, Sandy Hilderbrand, and a friend, who killed the dog.

Police are running background investigations on the dog and its owner this week to determine whether charges should be filed.
