A Honolulu officer on his way to an accident was injured today when a car running a red light broadsided his cruiser, police said.
The 27-year-old officer was taken to Queen's Medical Center in serious condition with abrasions and contusions to the head, neck and shoulders. He was released in fair condition.
Police said his car, a new 2001 Crown Victoria, appears to be a total loss.
The officer was headed southbound on Houghtailing Street with his siren and flashing blue lights on at 1:25 a.m. As he crossed King Street, an 'ewa-bound Acura Integra ran a red light and slammed into the driver's side, police said.
The force of the collision was so strong that the cruiser spun around and struck a traffic utility pole, police said.
All five occupants of the Integra fled. Police located and arrested two women, ages 24 and 20, and a 23-year-old man. They are being investigated for failure to render aid at an accident scene.
Police were able to speak with the driver by telephone, but he did not turn himself in this morning.
