Pedestrian struck near Ala Moana

A pedestrian was in critical condition today after he was struck by a van while trying to cross Ke'eaumoku Street last night, police traffic investigators said.

The 50-year-old was taken to Queen's Medical Center.

He was crossing Ke'eaumoku Street at Liona Street in the 'ewa direction at 10 p.m. yesterday when he was hit by a white Mazda van traveling south, police said.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors. The 38-year-old driver of the van was not arrested.

Family planning name may return

Family Planning Centers of Hawaii may become Planned Parenthood of Hawaii once again.

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America accreditation committee will hear a recommendation to reinstate the Hawai'i organization, which lost its affiliation three years ago.

Family Planning Centers said it lost accreditation because it did not want to be governed by a Mainland group.

But the national group said the Hawai'i office was not maintaining standards in financial and administrative matters.

The two groups have since resolved their differences.

Barry Raff, executive director of the Family Planning Centers, said independence strengthened the organization, but he's hoping to become a part of Planned Parenthood again.

Pali motorcyclist still critical

A 30-year-old man who crashed his speeding motorcycle on Pali Highway Monday night remained in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center today.

The crash occurred at 8:18 p.m. Monday near the Pali Golf Course on the town-bound side when the driver slammed on his brakes to avoid traffic and lost control.

He was thrown from the 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle and suffered head and body injuries. He was not wearing a helmet and had no license, police said.

They said speed was a factor in the crash, but it was not known whether the motorcyclist had been drinking.

Swimmer calls off Kaua'i-Ni'ihau try

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Swimmer Matthew Davidson has called off a swim from Kaua'i to Ni'ihau "out of respect for the Ni'ihau people."

Davidson, who was rescued Friday at mid-channel, had planned a repeat effort today.

Jeffrey Glaze, who was assisting him, said representatives of Ni'ihau residents told him they would prefer he respected their privacy, and Davidson agreed.

Davidson expressed thanks to Scott Miller, the Navy swimmer who helped him Friday afternoon.
