THE CHEESE CULTURE, a tasting of Old World cheeses, 6 p.m. at Mariposa at Neiman Marcus. Mariposa sommelier Roberto Viernes will pair the wines. $15. 951-3420.

SOUP CLASSICS, a cooking class, 6-9 p.m. at Kapi'olani Community College. Dave Calvan instructs on hot and chilled soups, including New England clam chowder, French onion, oriental egg blossom and seafood gazpacho. Fee: $25. 734-9211.

Friday

TASTE OF THE HAWAIIAN RANGE, 6-8 p.m. at the Hawai'i Preparatory Academy in Kamuela, Hawai'i. Beef and other forage-fed meats prepared by more than three dozen chefs from throughout the Islands. This is a home-grown event featuring the bounty of Big Island products. Tickets: $20. (808) 322-4892.

HOW TO GROW A MILLENNIUM GARDEN, an organic gardening workshop, 10 a.m-2 p.m. at Just Add Water, 41-851C Waikupanaha St., Waimanalo. Fee: $35. 259-5635.

AN EVENING WITH THE CHEF, featuring guest chef Ron Gallaher of the Big Island's La Bourgogne Restaurant, 6:30 p.m. at the Ship's Tavern at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider hotel. A classic, four-course French meal paired with wines from Beaulieu Vineyards will be served. The event is part of the 100-year anniversary celebration of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. $100 per person including tax and tip. 922-3111.

FATHER AND SON, a cooking demonstration at noon at Liberty House Ala Moana, featuring Kapi'olani Community College chef instructor Alfredo Cabacungan and son, Royal Hawaiian Hotel executive chef Alfred Cabacungan.
