Swimmer calls off Kaua'i-Ni'ihau try

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i—Swimmer Matthew Davidson has called off a swim from Kaua'i to Ni'ihau "out of respect for the Ni'ihau people."

Davidson, who was rescued Friday after reaching mid-channel, had planned a repeat effort today.

Jeffrey Glaze, who was assisting Davidson, said representatives of Ni'ihau residents told him they would prefer he respected their privacy, and Davidson agreed.

Davidson expressed thanks to Scott Miller, the Navy swimmer who assisted him from the water Friday afternoon.
