Hawai'i boxers en route to nationals

Nationally ranked boxers Glenn Miyose and Ronald Cordeiro, both of Wai'anae, will lead the Hawai'i Junior Olympic boxing team into the nationals starting Saturday at Marquette, Mich.

Miyose (125 pounds) and Cordeiro (112) are cousins ranked No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in their weight divisions. They are students at Wai'anae High School.

Other Hawai'i boxers on the team in the Junior Olympic Championships are Glenn Dunnings of Hawai'i Warriors Boxing Club (139 pounds, ranked No. 8), Kini Sofa (106) of Wai'anae B.C., Rance Okano (119) of Kaka'ako B.C., Jeffery Pelen (132) of Wai'anae B.C., Brian Holbron (147) of Wai'anae B.C., Sheldon Sarcedo (156) of Sarcedo & Sons B.C. and Keenyn Pahio (201) of Kalakaua B.C. The team will be accompanied by manager Bruce Kawano, head coach Doug Westbrook and assistant William Sarcedo.

The nationals run through June 23. Winners will train June 23-July 1, then compete in an international tournament with five countries at Marquette on July 2-9. The winners also will compete in the first under-17 World Championships on Oct. 2-21 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Russia.

2000 Olympian Brian Viloria of Waipahu (1995, 1996) and Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo (1998, 1999) are the only Hawai'i boxers who have won Junior Olympic championships.

VOLLEYBALL

• UH trio with U.S.: University of Hawai'i All-Americans Lily Kahumoku, Robyn Ah Mow and Heather Bown are with the USA Women's National Team in Switzerland this week, competing in the 2001 Montreaux Volley Masters Tournament.

This is the first major international event since the 2000 Olympics. Ah Mow and Bown helped the U.S. to a surprise fourth-place finish in Sydney. Kahumoku will be a junior on the Wahine team this fall.

With Bown and Ah Mow starting yesterday, the U.S. lost to Japan, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17.

Volley Masters is an eight-team event with teams split into two pools. The U.S. is with Russia, Italy and Japan. The top two teams advance to semifinals, with the championship scheduled for Sunday.

GOLF

• Nishimoto advances: Kaua'i pro Dan Nishimoto shot a 2-under-par 70 Monday at Mamala Bay to earn Hawai'i's lone qualifying spot for the 22nd annual U.S. Senior Open. Nishimoto also won the local qualifier last year.

The Senior Open is June 28-July 1 at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass.

Kapalua's Dean Prince finished a shot behind Nishimoto. David Ishikawa (73) was the second alternate and low amateur.

TRIATHLON

• Sawyer triumphs: Ralph Sawyer, of Pa'ia, Maui, won the Kings Trail Triathlon in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 29.7 seconds.

The triathlon, a 1500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run, was at Makena, Maui, on Sunday.

Jodi Jackson, of Honolulu, was the first female finisher in 2:19:40.3.

RUNNING

• Simon wins: Long-time Hawai'i runner Farley Simon won the Hawaiian Half Marathon at Waikiki Beach on Sunday.

Japan's Sayori Kusutani was the first female finisher.

Simon finished in 1 hour, 13 minutes, 34 seconds. Kusutani's time was 1:20:57.
